Knightdale, NC (September 30, 2020) – A Wake County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered injuries in a crash that took place on I-87 early Wednesday. The crash happened around 2:00 a.m. near Exit 9 for Smithfield Road.
According to a report from the scene, the deputy had stopped in order to assist a teenage driver who was stranded near the exit after his car broke down. The officer got out of his vehicle and began pushing the disabled car to the side of the roadway. As he was pushing the disabled vehicle, the officer was hit by a passing motorist. The vehicle then fled the scene after the collision.
The deputy suffered a serious injury to his arm but he is expected to recover. Police are still searching for the vehicle, which was described as a dark-colored SUV or a truck. The injured deputy was not immediately identified and there is no further information regarding the description of the vehicle.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing. There is no additional information available at this time.
