According to reports, 24-year-old Raekwon Nixon was riding a motorcycle on Holloway Street. At the same time, a Honda Fit was traveling northbound, in the opposite direction of Nixon. The driver of the Honda attempted to make a left turn but instead turned directly into the path of Nixon’s bike, causing a collision between the two vehicles.
Following the impact, the Honda driver fled the scene. Nixon was rushed by paramedics to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Police located the Honda a short time later which then led them to the driver, 45-year-old Amado Lopez. Lopez was arrested and was issued a charge for felony hit-and-run resulting in death. He was taken to the Durham County Jail and placed under a $10,000 bond.
The Durham Police Department is still investigating at this time. No additional information has been released.
Our condolences and sympathies go out to the family of Raekwon Nixon during this difficult time.
North Carolina Motorcycle Accidents
According to statistics published by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, there were more than 4,200 motorcycle accidents reported in our state last year. A total of 160 people were killed in these crashes and 3,666 were injured. The rates of both injuries and fatalities in North Carolina motorcycle accidents far exceed the injury and fatality rates for car accidents and accidents involving other types of vehicles. It is clear that the dangers of riding a motorcycle are great and the risks of being hurt or killed if you are involved in an accident are high.
Although there is a high risk to motorcyclists, many crashes are not the fault of the rider but are instead caused by negligent drivers in cars and other types of motor vehicles. A motorcycle accident in North Carolina can be a devastating event for the victim and their families. Many motorists do not pay attention and fail to see motorcyclists until it is too late to avoid a crash. The actions of these drivers are a very common cause of accidents in our state.
If you have been the victim of a negligent driver, North Carolina motorcycle accident lawyer Jason M. Burton will fight for your legal rights to recover the compensation you deserve.
