Statesville, NC – Michael Watkins Killed in Crash on Garner Bagnal Blvd.

Statesville, NC (September 5, 2020) – A 62-year-old man from Statesville is dead after a crash that took place Thursday afternoon on Garner Bagnal Boulevard. The collision reportedly occurred near the intersection with Newton Drive.

According to investigators, Michael Henry Watkins was traveling northbound on Garner Bagnal in a 2004 Jeep Cherokee when he tried to make a left turn onto Newton Drive. As Watkins turned, his vehicle collided with a southbound tractor-trailer driven by 37-year-old Latoyia Spears of Salisbury.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene to render aid following the crash. Both Watkins, as well as an unidentified passenger, were killed in the accident. Spears was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries. There is no update on her condition at this time. The crash caused Garner Bagnal to shut down for several hours. Motorists in the area were urged to find alternate routes of travel and to avoid the scene if possible.
