Charlotte, NC – One Killed, Two Hurt in Three-Car Crash on Sunset Road

Charlotte, NC (August 10, 2020) – One person was killed and two others suffered injuries after a three-vehicle crash in north Charlotte on Saturday afternoon. The accident was reported around 3:40 p.m. in the 5000 block of Sunset Road.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the crash scene shortly after the collision took place. According to police, a motorcycle, a Chevrolet Avalance, and a Nissan Altima were involved in the accident.

The Avalanche driver, James Brooks was traveling westbound when he failed to slow down before colliding with the back of the Altima. The Altima traveled across the median and veered into the eastbound lanes, striking the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle, 52-year-old Timothy Rice, died at the crash scene.

Police charged Brooks with misdemeanor death by vehicle, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to reduce speed. One other person was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and another person was treated for minor injuries. It is not clear which vehicles the other victims were occupying at the time of the crash. The road was closed for several hours while police conducted an investigation.

There is no further information available at this time.

We extend our condolences to the family of Timothy Rice following this tragic crash in Charlotte. Our thoughts are with the injured victims as they recover from their injuries.
