According to Surry County EMS Director John Shelton, 50-year-old Todd Gillespie was riding a scooter on I-77 when he was run over by a tractor-trailer in the southbound lanes of the highway. When rescue workers arrived at the scene Gillespie was found lying in the roadway next to his scooter. He was later pronounced dead at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. The truck driver was not injured in the accident.
The crash remains under investigation at this time and there is no word on whether charges will be issued.
