Fatal Accidents in North Carolina Robeson County, NC - Larry Oxendine Killed in Bicycle Crash on Union Chapel Rd.

On average, there are approximately 120 fatal bicycle accidents in North Carolina each year. Bicyclists are at great risk of death or serious bodily injury when they are involved in a crash. A bicycle offers almost no protection from the force and impact of the crash. Riders should always wear protective gear, including helmets, but protective equipment does not prevent serious injuries when a vehicle is involved in the crash.

Many bicyclists are killed or injured in crashes that were not their fault. Although a bicycle rider has the same rights as a pedestrian or other individual on the roadway, motorists often fail to honor these rights. This includes drivers who drive carelessly and negligently and fail to follow traffic safety laws, thus causing a serious accident. Impaired drivers also contribute to the number of major crashes on our roadways. These drivers lack the ability to appreciate the dangerousness of their actions and the risk that they pose to others.
