Charlotte, NC – Utility Worker Hit, Killed in Crash on Granite Street

Charlotte, NC (August 9, 2020) – A utility worker died after he was struck by a car at a South Charlotte job site on Saturday, August 8th. The crash took place just after 6:00 a.m. on Granite Street near the intersection with Continental Boulevard.

According to reports from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, 59-year-old Thomas Reynolds Porter, Jr. was standing in the roadway with his back to traffic when he was hit by a passing vehicle. The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped to call 911. Rescue workers rushed to the scene and administered medical treatment to Porter. Ultimately, their efforts were unsuccessful and Porter succumbed to his injuries.

At the time of the crash, Porter was wearing a yellow reflective vest at the time he was hit and a company vehicle with flashing lights was parked nearby. CMPD officers along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are currently conducting an investigation into Porter’s death. Police do not believe that speeding or impairment were factors in the crash. No other injuries were reported.
