Kill Devil Hills, NC – Outer Banks Teen Critically Hurt in U.S. 158 Crash

Kill Devil Hills, NC (January 27, 2021) – A 16-year-old girl from Kill Devil Hills is in critical condition following a serious accident that took place on Tuesday. The crash happened on U.S. Highway 158 in Kill Devil Hills.

The Kill Devil Hills Police Department responded to the accident scene. Police say that the 16-year-old girl was operating a Jeep on U.S. 158 when she came to an intersection with a stop sign. At the same time, a Volvo driven by 23-year-old Merlin Garrett Cole, of Colington, ran the stop sign and collided with the rear passenger side of the Jeep. The girl, who was a passenger in the Jeep, was ejected from the vehicle. Following the accident, she was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries and massive head trauma. Two other occupants of the Jeep were not seriously injured.

Cole tested positive for alcohol consumption at the scene. The results of a blood-alcohol test are pending at this time. Charges against Cole are also pending. There is no additional information available.
