Gaston County, NC – 6-Year-Old Boy Killed, Father Hurt in Street Racing Crash on U.S. 74

Gaston County, NC (June 28, 2021) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a fatal crash in Gaston County on Saturday, June 26th. The accident took place around 9:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 74 near Sparrow Spring Road.

According to troopers, 20-year-old Gracie Eaves, of Bessemer City was driving a Dodge Challenger eastbound on U.S. 74. At the same time 46-year-old Donnie Cobb, of Kings Mountain, was driving an Audi, also eastbound on U.S. 74. The two cars were racing and were traveling at speeds up to 100 miles per hour when they sideswiped each other. Cobb’s vehicle traveled across a grassy median and veered into the westbound lanes where it collided head-on with a car driven by Santiago Lagunas.

Lagunas’ six-year-old son was in the back seat at the time of the collision. He suffered critical injuries and later died at the hospital around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Lagunas suffered critical injuries and was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center for treatment. Cobb was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, also in critical condition. There is no word on whether Eaves was injured.

Troopers are still investigating the accident at this time. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. There is no further information available.
