Dare County, NC – Teen Killed, Man Hurt in Crash on Wright Memorial Bridge

Dare County, NC (May 16, 2021) – A teenager is dead and his father injured after a fiery car crash at the Outer Banks on Saturday. The accident took place around 2:50 p.m. on the Wright Memorial Bridge near Powells Points.

According to Kitty Hawk Fire Chief Mike Talley, a 17-year-old boy was driving a Jeep on the bridge when he lost control of his vehicle. The Jeep flipped over and came to rest before catching fire on the bridge. The teen became trapped inside the vehicle and died at the accident scene. His father, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Outer Banks Hospital with unknown injuries.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol also responded to the scene. According to 1st. Sgt. E.J. Forbes, the crash may have been caused due to a problem with the tires of the Jeep. Traffic in the eastbound lanes of the bridge was diverted to the westbound lanes while police investigated the crash. Motorists were told to expect delays.
