The Statesville Police Department was called to the scene just after the accident occurred. According to reports from police, Zarrie Edward James was riding a dirt bike on Alexander when he was hit by a Volkswagen Touareg. The Touareg was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision took place. After the crash, the driver of the Touareg left the scene and continued traveling eastbound on Alexander. The car then struck a gas pipeline and a tree before coming to rest near a residence in the 800 block of Alexander. The driver then fled the scene on foot.
James suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to the injuries. There is no word on the cause of the accident at this time.
The Statesville Police Department is still looking for the suspect. The car was described as having a North Carolina license plate number FLK 5153.
