Clemmons, NC – One Killed, One Hurt in Wrong-Way Crash on I-40

Clemmons, NC (February 2, 2021) – A driver was killed and another was hurt in a wrong-way crash that took place in Clemmons on Monday night. The collision took place on Interstate 40 in the westbound lanes of the highway.

According to troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 78-year-old Billy Ray Willard of Stoneville was driving a 1988 Ford Bronco eastbound in the westbound lanes of the roadway just after sunset. While in the eastbound lanes, his car collided with a Mazda SUV driven by Randall Scott Pennington of Palm Beach, FL. Willard sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Pennington and his passenger, Darla Pennington, were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused the road to be closed for nearly three hours as traffic was backed up near the accident scene. Motorists were advised to find alternate routes if possible. Officials believe that a medical condition may have caused the accident.
