Catawba, NC – Woman Seriously Hurt in RV Crash on I-40

Catawba, NC (July 16, 2020) – Police responded to a crash in Catawba on Thursday, July 16th. The crash was first reported just before noon in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the Catawba River Bridge.

According to reports, an RV was traveling over the bridge when the female driver collided with the rear-end of a tractor-trailer that was traveling in the same direction. Rescue crews arrived shortly after the crash to evaluate the injured woman. After being treated at the scene, she was transported to a nearby hospital via helicopter. The woman’s injuries were described as serious, but non-life-threatening. There is no additional update on her condition and authorities have not released her age or name at this time. The identity of the tractor-trailer driver is also unavailable.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured as a result of the crash. An investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time. Investigators believe that the crash was caused by a sudden cloud of dust or a possible mechanical problem with a wheel on the tractor-trailer that caused it to make a sudden stop.

The area was blocked for several hours while troopers cleaned up debris at the scene and motorists were urged to find alternate routes. There is no word on whether charges are expected.
