Pedestrian Accidents in North Carolina
In 2018, there 228 pedestrian accident fatalities in North Carolina. This number represented an increase of over 13% from the year before. In 2017, there 200 reported fatalities due to pedestrian crashes in our state. The rise in these cases is troubling and indicates the dangers that face pedestrians on our streets and highways. A North Carolina pedestrian accident can happen very suddenly and can also have catastrophic consequences for the victim.
Each pedestrian accident must be carefully investigated by the police. The causes of each crash will vary. Some common reasons for pedestrian accidents include failing to yield at crosswalks, driver inattention, speeding, reckless driving, or impaired driving. In many instances, the driver will fail to see or respond to the pedestrian until it is too late to avoid an accident. Given that well over 80% of all pedestrian accidents in North Carolina result in injury, drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and should do all that they can to avoid a crash from occurring. Sadly, most serious and fatal crashes that occur would have been preventable if one or more parties had exercised reasonable caution prior to the crash occurring.
