According to the State Highway Patrol, 20-year-old German Mendoza Cornelio, of St. Pauls, was driving a 2008 Nissan Frontier eastbound on N.C. 20 when the car ran off the road to the right. Cornelio overcorrected the vehicle, causing it to come back onto the roadway and strike two trees before overturning. Another passenger, 39-year-old Samuel Rojas, also of St. Pauls, was taken to UNC. He suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident.

Police determined that Cornelio was traveling approximately 65 mph in a 35 mph zone at the time of the accident. Alcohol was located in the vehicle but it is not clear if that played a role in the collision.
