Lumberton, NC – Two Killed in Car Accident on I-74

Lumberton, NC (January 1, 2021) – Two people were killed and two more were injured following a single-vehicle crash in Lumberton earlier this week. The accident happened on Monday, December 28th along Interstate 74 at approximately 7:30 p.m.

According to a report from Sgt. X.S. McPherson of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 68-year-old Larry Gladden was operating a GMC SUV when, for unknown reasons, the car traveled off the road to the right and struck a culvert and several trees before coming to rest on the shoulder of the roadway. 90-year-old Dorris Dees, of Chadbourn, and 64-year-old Deborah Dees-Gladden, of Harrisburg, were hurt in the crash. 92-year-old Evelyn Anderson and Larry Gladden were rushed to UNC Health Southeastern with serious injuries. Anderson was listed in critical condition.

Troopers have ruled out alcohol as a cause of the crash but have charged Gladden with reckless driving for his role in the accident. The investigation remains ongoing at this time. There is no further information available.
